DONALD CHAVEZ Y GILBERT WILL BE GUEST SPEAKER FOR THE HISPANIC GENEALOGICAL RESERCH CENTER OF NEW MEXICO’S (HGRC) MEETING ON AUGUST 9, 2025. Mr. Chavez y Gilbert, Valencia County rancher and historian, will discuss the DNA research connecting the New Mexico Dahl Sheep to those sheep brought to New Mexico by Juan de Oñate and colonists in 1598. He will also talk about the breeding techniques that have restored this unique breed that almost went extinct. A descendant of early Spanish settlers in Belén, Chaez y Gilbert runs the 20-acre Terra Patre Farm, which was once a part of the 200,000-acre Belén Land Grant. This free HGRC presentation will held from 10:30 am – 12:00 noon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (Dominici Bldg), located at 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM.
