Tumacacori NHP and the University of Pennsylvania are partnering in a five-year project to conserve the painted surfaces of the nave and sanctuary below the dome of the mission church of Tumacacori. A comprehensive condition assessment will first be completed which involves combining photographic information with observations. This would allow information on the location and extent of the original materials to be updated digitally and to monitor the efficiency of the repair work. All past repairs will be documented in order to provide baseline data, focusing particularly on incompatible repairs. This will help determine how to prioritize what areas will be addressed and what treatment will occur to these painted surfaces. Information on this project will be disseminated to the public and the scientific community, and also posted on Tumacacori’s website at https://www.nps.gov/tuma/.
