SMRC recently learned about the passing of Dr. Susan M. Deeds (1943-2025), Professor Emerita of History at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Dr. Deeds graduated from the University of Nebraska, earning her MA degree in Mexican history in 1974. She earned her PhD. in Mexican history at the University of Arizona (UA) in 1981 and taught there until joining the faculty of the history department at NAU in 1985. Dr. Deeds made a significant impact during her 25 years at NAU, becoming a key figure in the Latin American studies program, having mentored many students. She had many scholarly achievements including several publications and professional associations. In her honor, NAU has established the Susan Deeds Memorial Fund to support scholarships for students in Latin American and borderlands history.
