On Saturday, April 25, 2026, Friends of the San Pedro River (FSPR) will sponsor a “History Walk to Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate.” Join this walking tour of the Spanish Presidio of Santa Cruz de Terrenate with FSPR docent Jeff Hustad. This presidio was operational during the late 1770s, the centerpiece for a planned Spanish occupation of the San Pedro River Valley that failed. This free tour will be held from 9:00-11:00 am, starting at the Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate Trailhead parking area (searchable as “Presidio Santa Cruz Terrenate Trailhead” in Google Maps). Drive 8.3 miles east of Whetstone on Arizona Highway 82/AZ-82 (about 1 mile west of the San Pedro River), turn north onto In Balance Ranch Road (which is N. Kellar Rd. on Google Maps), and go 1.7 miles to the trailhead. The walking tour is a three-mile round-trip over trails and uneven ground. The return walk is gradually uphill. Please realistically assess your ability to do this walk. There is no shade, and it will be hot on sunny days.  Wear a hat, sun protection, appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes.  Bring water and snacks. Participants must sign a liability waiver before the walk starts.
