Tucson was featured in the New York Times, noting it as the only city in the U.S. designated by UNESCO as the City of Gastronomy. The article, titled “Tucson Becomes an Unlikely Food Star” (by Kim Severson, 8/24/2016), described Tucson as “a muscular food town” with a “passion to its food culture that goes well beyond the kitchen.” Tucson’s food culture includes a devotion to promoting and incorporating heritage foods in its diet. Some participating groups featured were Mission Gardens, the Tohono O’odham nation’s San Xavier Co-op Farm, and Native Seeds/SEARCH.
