Mostly forgotten today, the early history of Sonora (including today’s Arizona) was profoundly influenced and determined by German-speaking Jesuit missionaries, including Padre Eusebio Kino. This program will introduce some of the major figures such as Kino, Ignaz Pfefferkorn, Joseph Och, and Philipp Segesser. Experience “living history” as Dr. Albrecht Classen, distinguished professor of German Studies at the University of Arizona, demonstrates the significance of early Sonora in the global politics of the eighteenth century. This program is sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council.
